When Swiss explorer Auguste Piccard first took his submarine down to an incredible depth of 3,131m, a specially-designed Rolex accompanied him, and emerged from the water keeping perfect time. This was the inspiration for the 1953 introduction of the Rolex Submariner, arguably the most important watch in history, inspiring not only future dive watches but the entire sports watch category. This model, the 5513, was produced from 1962 all the way to 1989, with this excellent early specimen dating to 1963. It features the classic black and steel Submariner colour scheme, with a black gilt dial forged in a time-consuming process that exposes the brass underneath the dial’s face, resulting in golden text and markers and making the piece hugely collectible. The stainless steel case measures a commanding 40mm, with a black rotating bezel and pointed crown guards. The watch’s original Oyster bracelet is a beautiful example of a Rolex early-60’s ‘rivet’ stretch bracelet and is still in excellent condition, melting into the wrist when worn. A watch that stands the test of time.

Our approach is simple: we only buy watches we would be proud to own ourselves. Every piece is selected on its individual merits, with an uncompromising focus on originality, condition, provenance and overall quality. We have no interest in filling our inventory for the sake of it; if an example doesn’t meet our expectations, we leave it behind. Whether it is an important vintage reference, a rare modern complication or an exceptional everyday piece, we search for the best examples we can find and buy only what genuinely excites us. Taste and quality come before volume, every time.

That same standard extends to authentication. Every watch we acquire is subjected to rigorous examination, with the case, dial, movement, components, serial and reference details carefully assessed for authenticity, originality and consistency with the period of manufacture. Where appropriate, provenance and accompanying documentation are scrutinised with equal care. In this business, reputation is everything, and ours is attached to every watch we sell. We would rather walk away from a watch and a deal than offer something we are not completely comfortable putting our name behind. When a watch enters our collection, it is there because we believe it deserves to be.
